As an artist I am inspired by science and technology, particularly the notion of inquiry into the unknown. I am inspired by the writings of physicist Mickio Kaku particularly ‘visions‘. Scientific advancements allows us to understand more about ourselves and the presently unknown, as artist Mara Haseltine stated “…the beginnings of advanced technologies so that we can simultaneously look within ourselves and at the outermost reaches of the cosmos…” Recently I have worked mainly with black, and the idea of black on black. I use various mediums particularly acrylic paint and acrylic glass. The qualities I aim for: physical openness of design, linear clarity, hard-edged, geometrical regularity, and optical clarity. I create schematic drawings which act as ’mini visions’ into the unknown. I feel the schematics depict a mathematical beauty, and the purity of a free hand drawing. I also etch schematics onto black acrylic glass. The reflective nature of the manufactured material is significant. The light and colour revealed by the reflective nature is an aspect of the work . By using black acrylic glass I find both the etched, reflective surface and the depth of the blackness creates a dual-function. I feel my ‘black’ artworks are sober pieces which can be physically and psychologically reflective, the viewer is invited to reflect upon the restful emptiness of the works. The black paintings conceal and yet reveal everything with more observation. The black on black paint allows the images to emerge and disappear into the blackness as light travels across the surface of the painting. Black has many symbolic issues and meanings, different to many cultures. However, I am using black for its mystery, which there seems to be a consensus in all definitions. Strictly speaking black is not a colour, it is the absence of all colour. Black absorbs all aspects of light, black conceals. This links black to the hidden, unknown or unseen. Black is seen as a restful emptiness into which anything may emerge or disappear. The mystery of black provides a sense of potential and possibility. Black can give the feeling of perspective and depth. I link all this to the unknown and mystery in scientific research. Scientific research is the unravelling of clues, an investigation into the unknown. The black in this work is the mystery of the future, what will science uncover? Where will technological advances lead?
